SpVg. Porz will ring a name with some fans for more reasons than others. However, to end the 2018-29 season, FC were invited by Porz to the Autohaus-Schmitz-Sportpark as part of the hosts’ centenary celebrations. The game ended in an 8:1 win for FC.
Porz made a stable start to life in the Landesliga last season following promotion from the Bezirksliga (seventh tier) after several seasons battling to return. Jonas Wendt, the head coach and former FC academy player, has had his team back playing friendlies since the middle of July. While Porz are yet to secure a victory, they have had good run outs against Fortuna Köln (0:1) and Bergisch Gladbach (1:4).
The pre-season preparations ahead of the new season began last Wednesday, as the team went through their usual check-ups and performance tests. Markus Gisdol’s men then had the chance to get back out onto the pitch on Saturday in Franz-Kremer-Stadion, with the ball at their feet.
The beginning of pre-season has already been hard work, with the FC head coach favouring a shorter and more intense preparation for the upcoming campaign. Hopefully, come kick-off on Tuesday evening, the temperatures are somewhat cooler than the 35°C on Saturday morning.

Porz are not only a recent opponent and is not just one of the nine districts (the largest of all, to be precise) in Köln. SG Porz are one of Germany’s most historically successful chess teams, having won the Chess Bundesliga a total of eight times.
Porz is also where FC legends Wolfgang Weber and Bernd Cullmann started off their careers. Bulle Weber went on become an FC Hall of Fame inductee, with Cullmann winning the World Cup, European Championship and Double while with FC.
There will be no livestream of the game on Tuesday, meaning the best way to keep up-to-date with the first friendly of pre-season will be on the English Twitter account. Live updates from the game can be found regularly there.
