Matchday 2

Preview ahead of the home game against BVB

Friday night football under the floodlights. 1. FC Köln will finally make their home return in the Bundesliga on Friday evening after 476 days of waiting. They welcome current league leaders, Borussia Dortmund to the RheinEnergieSTADION.

Form check

1. FC Köln: After a 3:3 thriller in Wiesbaden that saw FC prevail on penalties, Achim Beierlorzer’s first Bundesliga game ended in a 2:1 defeat at VfL Wolfsburg. In a game where FC were the better side for the majority of the first half, a slow second meant the home side came away with the points. However, Simon Terodde’s goal was well-deserved after a battling performance. FC will be hoping to carry that moment into the second game of the season.

Borussia Dortmund: BVB also managed to make it into the second round of the DFB-Pokal, securing a 2:0 victory against KFC Uerdingen. Despite falling behind to FC Augsburg in the first minute of their Bundesliga opener, Lucien Favre’s side bounced back in style to secure a 5:1 win and move top of the table. With Bayern Munich having dropped points in the first game of the season against Hertha BSC, Dortmund will be hoping to heap further pressure on Bayern with a result on Friday night.

The managers have had their say

Achim Beierlorzer: We know that we need a really good performance and day at the office in order to trouble BVB. Dortmund are good on the ball and have unbelievable pace when it comes to going forward. Augsburg were, at a stage, very passive against them. This shouldn't happen to us. We need a lot of courage. But we're also not bad at football.

Lucien Favre: We have seen quite a lot of games from Köln. They are ready, have a good base to build from and press very well and hard.

Squad update

1. FC Köln: Christian Clemens and Ismail Jakobs are still out injured due to their long term problems, but Louis Schaub rejoined team training on Wednesday. Achim Beierlorzer stated that, should all go to plan, he could be available on Friday. Jhon Cordoba is back and available for selection after serving the final game of his suspension against Wolfsburg.

Borussia Dortmund: Roman Bürki should return for Borussia Dortmund in goal on Friday evening. Raphael Guerreiro and Mateu Moray could also make their returns after some time out. After the 5:1 win over Augsburg, it’s unlikely that Lucien Favre will make too many changes to his line-up.

Statistics

  • Borussia Dortmund dominated their game against FC Augsburg on Saturday. BVB had 72% possession and had a pass success rate of 92.3%. Axel Witsel and Manuel Akanji both had pass accuracies of over 96%.
  • Of players to have played 10 minutes or more on Matchday 1, no outfield player won a higher percentage of their challenges than Kingsley Ehizibue (89%) on his Bundesliga debut.
  • Between 1967 and 1990, Borussia Dortmund failed to win in Köln – drawing fives times and losing 15. In the following 20 fixtures in Köln, BVB have won 11 and lost five.

Opposition dangerman

There are plenty of options to highlight with this Dortmund team, especially given their attacking display against FC Augsburg. While Jadon Sancho, Thorgan Hazard, Julian Brandt and Paco Alcacer make for tough reading that would be forgetting captain and talisman, Marco Reus. Last year, the 30-year-old overcame his injury troubles and shone again. He got into double figures for the first time since 2013-14, and looks set to recreate that form after starting with a goal and assist against Augsburg. Dangerous inside and outside the box, and from dead balls, when Reus plays well, so do BVB.

Trivia

  • FC have faced Borussia Dormtund 86 times in Bundesliga history. FC have came out on top in 27 of those meetings, with BVB winners on 36 occasions. The remaining 23 matches have ended in a draw.
  • 1. FC Köln’s record against BVB in recent years has been somewhat even. While BVB tasted victory in the last two games between the sides, that ended a run of three draws in the fixture. Prior to that, FC won two of the last meetings and have scored in every game at the RheinEnergieSTADION since 2008.
  • Since his move to Borussia Dortmund, Marco Reus has never featured in a win over FC. He missed the most recent victories due to injury. The man who makes BVB’s attack tick has yet to earn three points in Black and Yellow against the Billy Goats.
