Matchday 8

Preview ahead of the home game against Paderborn

After a 15-day break, 1. FC Köln are back in competitive action. SC Paderborn will be the visitors to the RheinEnergieSTADION on Sunday afternoon, as FC enter a busy period of five games in 25 days.

Form check

1. FC Köln: FC got their fourth point on the board of the Bundesliga season against Schalke in dramatic circumstances. Jonas Hector’s header in the last-minute secured a deserved share of the spoils and gave a substantial boost to the morale. After facing six of the top eight in the first seven games of the season, Achim Beierlorzer’s side will be keen to get down to business against Paderborn and pick up the first points at home this season.

SC Paderborn: Following promotion, Paderborn haven’t had it easy on their return to the Bundesliga. Steffen Baumgart’s team have managed to take just one point from the first seven games. With Bayern, Schalke, Wolfsburg and Leverkusen amongst the opening fixtures, it’s been a similarly tough start to that of FC. They failed to take what would have been their first point of the season, as Jamilu Collins penalty was saved and meant they fell to a 1:2 defeat.

The managers have had their say

Achim Beierlorzer: "We want to build on the performance against Schalke. We've got to defend well. We need pace going forward, deep running and solid build-up and players who can play under pressure. We want our first home win. Therefore, we've got to be clever and bring our strengths onto the pitch."

Steffen Baumgart: "We'll attack from the front, and be brave when we go forward. We want to put Köln under pressure and bring home the three points. We know what is waiting on us, both in terms of atmosphere and when it comes to the footballing side of things."

Squad update

1. FC Köln: With the international break done and dusted without any injury to FC players, Achim Beierlorzer has no new injury concerns. The game is could come too soon for Birger Verstraete, although Dominick Drexler did rejoin training on Thursday. Lasse Sobiech and Matthias Bader, who picked up muscle injuries last week, will miss the game. Jorge Meré will severe the final game of his two-match suspension against Paderborn.

SC Paderborn: Steffen Baumgart could welcome back Sebastian Schonlau into the starting line-up. The defender had been suffering with foot problems and missed the game against Mainz as a result. The timing couldn’t be better, given that Uwe Hünemeier is out for several weeks with ankle ligament problems.

Opposition dangerman

Sven Michel is the man that has been making Paderborn tick through their rise up the divisions. Michel has been with the Ostwestfalen side after licencing problems kept them in 3. Liga, and the 29-year-old went on to rack up 19 goals and 12 assists to return Paderborn to 2. Bundesliga. Another 10 goals and seven assists saw him play a key role in that again in an unlikely promotion. Michel fittingly grabbed Paderborn’s first goal of the season, and will be hoping to add to that on Sunday.
