Matchday 21

Preview ahead of the trip to Frankfurt

1. FC Köln are in Hessen to take on Eintracht Frankfurt this afternoon. FC’s run of three wins in four Bundesliga outings faces up against 2021’s side to beat.

Form check

Eintracht Frankfurt: Adi Hütter’s men are the most in-form Bundesliga team since the turn of the year. After seven games in 2021, Frankfurt have managed to take 19 from a possible 21 points. The only blot on the coffee book was a 2:2 draw with SC Freiburg. That run of form has taken them to fourth in the league. They are now right in the mix to come away with a Champions League spot.

1. FC Köln: Despite the cup exit against Jahn Regensburg, things have took a turn for the better at FC lately. Three wins from their last four Bundesliga games, including that special derby victory, means Markus Gisdol’s charges currently have 21 points from 20 matches. While the situation at the bottom remains tense, the recent run of form has certainly helped to keep FC out of the relegation zone.

The managers have had their say

Adi Hütter: “If I could choose, I don't care if we concede a goal but win the game. In the end, it is all about victories. The fact that we sometimes offer up space to our opponents is due to our attacking style of play. Still, we do not allow many opportunities.”

Markus Gisdol: “Eintracht Frankfurt are a team that have outstanding players. But you don't know who will stand out at the weekend, because they are in great overall shape. Frankfurt have been doing well for weeks now, and they have a deep, physically strong squad.”

Squad update

Eintracht Frankfurt: Adi Hütter expects all Eintracht players to be fit in time for the game. The only doubts lies over Ragnar Ache and Aymen Barkok after the two were taken out of training, yet both should be ready as part of the squad.

1. FC Köln: FC remain with Sebastian Andersson and Florian Kainz due to their long-term injuries. Sebastiaan Bornauw’s back problems will keep him out of contention this weekend. There are question marks over Jonas Hector, Ismail Jakobs and Marius Wolf.

Opposition dangerman

There aren’t many players in Europe, let alone the Bundesliga, who are more in form than André Silva at the moment. His 17 league goals this campaign is second only to Robert Lewandowski. However, in 2021, it is the Portuguese forward who rules the roost. He has scored eight times thus far, one more than Lewandowski’s seven.

Recent record

The last 10 meetings between the two sides have produced four victories apiece and two draws. Frankfurt have scored 19 goals to FC’s 18, in which has proven to be a fixture that is very hard to predict. However, the last two meetings have ended all square. The last win in a game between FC and Frankfurt was last season’s tussle in the Deutsche Bank Park, a memorable 4:2 triumph for FC.
