Stefan Ruthenbeck on Wolfsburg

Run, Tackle, and Scratch

The final league match of the Hinrunde sees 1. FC Köln host VfL Wolfsburg at the RheinEnergieSTADION on Saturday. Stefan Ruthenbeck expects his team to show some fight on the pitch.

Stefan Ruthenbeck spoke on Friday’s press conference about…

  • …the approach to Saturday’s match: “We will take the same approach as in the last few matches. We have a game plan that we want to implement to trouble our opponent. A few players will come in so that we are fresh. We do not want to sit back. We want to show courage. It is another final and we want to do everything we can to get our first league win of the season.”
  • …the squad situation: “Sehrou Guirassy had his toenail removed and will not be fit for selection. In the case of Claudio Pizarro, we hope he can be available in time to begin the preparations for the Rückrunde. Yuya Osako is still recovering from his lung infection and we will need to monitor the situation. The positive news is that Marco Höger will be back in the squad. He is an experienced player with a strong mentality, so he will be good for the team. He made a strong impression in training and will definitely be in the squad.”
  • …the meaning of a potential win: “It is extremely important to get a win. Not just for the team, but for everyone. The losing streak has been too long. We need to reward ourselves.”
  • …the pressure on the players: “We have clearly stated that we want to play for good results. Of course, pressure has to be there. It would not be fair to the fans if there was not. So many of our fans made the trip to Munich and we did not want to allow a 6-0 rout. We do not care who plays on Saturday. Run, tackle, and scratch if you have to. Determination and will is something every player can do and it is something I expect.”
