2:2 draw

Schalke friendly ends all-square

1. FC Köln and FC Schalke 04 played out a 2:2 draw in Franz-Kremer-Stadion on Thursday afternoon. Marius Bülter opened the scoring before Anthony Modeste and Sebastian Andersson turned the game around. Marvin Pieringer then levelled for Schalke in the 73rd minute.

Team news

Jeff Chabot immediately made his FC debut, just a day after arriving from Sampdoria. The towering centre-back had Timo Horn behind him as he made his return from injury and illness after two months on the sidelines.

Stalemate at the break

Mark Uth had the first early effort on goal after just three minutes, but his curling effort flew wide of the top corner. However, Schalke were the team to go in front. A strong counter from the visitors ended with Andreas Vindheim picking out Marius Bülter, who headed the ball back from where it came to open the scoring. Timo Horn had to be alert deny Dominick Drexler moments later.

After the goal came little in the way of chances for both sides as the rain began to intensify in Franz-Kremer-Stadion. FC were able to get level before the half-hour mark. Schalke played the ball back to Ralf Fährmann and Anthony Modeste pressed brilliantly as the ball crashed into his legs to roll into an empty net.

The remainder of the first-half was end-to-end. Darko Churlinov failed to hit the target from close range after another speedy Schalke breakaway. Tomas Ostrak went on a mazy run that almost ended in a good opening but the visitors were able to clear. Otherwise, it was a case of the final pass and finish lacking at both ends of the pitch.

Pieringer levels late on

Seven changes at the break followed for FC as Timo Hübers, Kingsley Schindler, Mathias Olesen, Florian Kainz, Ondrej Duda, Jan Thielmann and Sebastian Andersson all came on. It was two substitutes who combined to give FC the lead shortly after. Kainz crossed low for Andersson, who was able to poke past Fährmann from six yards out.

Schalke then made eight changes of their own as the game began to lose rhythm. There was, however, a first appearance for the first-team for Rijad Smajic as he and Marvin Obuz came on after an hour. There was little to report in the final half hour, apart from Schalke’s equaliser. Simon Terodde’s header was kept out well by Timo Horn only for Marvin Pieringer to pounce and level.
