Skhiri is Man of the Match

Thanks to a huge effort, 1. FC Köln earned their first win of the season in Freiburg. The Man of the Match in the 2:1 success was the midfielder maestro who got the winning goal, Ellyes Skhiri.

After two games without reward to start the season, 1. FC Köln got the monkey off their back on Saturday afternoon in Freiburg. After FC thought they went ahead through Kingsley Schindler, Rafael Czichos unfortunately put through his on net in the immediate aftermath. However, FC battled back and turned the game around in added time. After the game, FC Fans voted on the digital channels for their Man of the Match. Up for the vote were Anthony Modeste, Ellyes Skhiri and Birger Verstraete.

Anthony Modeste: The wait is over! His bullet header to make it 1:1 was Anthony Modeste’s first goal of the season. For FC, it was the signal that something was possible in Freiburg, “It’s not a goal that many can score,” said managing director, Armin Veh. This time, in periods where he was the lone forward, the Frenchman battled constantly through challenges with Freiburg’s back three. He went into more challenges (20) than any other FC player, 15 of which were headers, and won nine of those – a top value for the game. Then, of course, there was that goal. Anthony Modeste also played his part on the ground, completing 87.5% of his passes.

Ellyes Skhiri: Staying in the shadows in a warm day in Freiburg? Not Ellyes Skhiri. He ran more than most would when it’s 18 degrees and it’s raining. He didn’t stop, and that included in added time when he charged through midfield and slammed home at the near post to beat Alexander Schwolow and give FC the win. The season is still young, but that goal will be remembered throughout the campaign. He ran 12.5km in Freiburg which, like against BVB, was more than anyone else. He won 11 challenges, a top mark along with Sebastiaan Bornauw, and completed 89% of his passes – more than any other FC player.

Birger Verstraete: His value to 1. FC Köln’s game is clear after his first three games in red and white. Verstraete brings stability both offensively and defensively to the FC midfield. Strong in the tackle, solid in the build-up and dangerous set-pieces. He more than played his part in the win, running almost 11km.

With more than three quarters of the votes, Ellyes Skhiri came in ahead of Modeste and Verstraete. Congratulations, Ellyes!
