Match Preview: Gladbach

Start the year right

2018 begins the same way the 2017/18 Bundesliga season started back in August: with a derby against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Both teams had zero points at the start of the last derby, but much has happened since.

The derby between 1. FC Köln and Borussia Mönchengladbach is one of the highlights of the year. This year in 2018, it is coming right at the start. Fourteen days into the new year and FC host Gladbach at the RheinEnergieSTADION. The euphoria of the Europa League is long gone as FC continue their battle for survival in Germany’s top flight.

It is close at the top as multiple teams vie for a berth in next season’s Champions League. Borussia Mönchengladbach happens to be one of those teams. A point tally of 28 points currently sees Gladbach in sixth place of the Bundesliga standings. Their goal scoring ability has them among one of the elite sides in German football, but it is their defensive futility that has decelerated their ascent to the top. With 28 goals conceded, Gladbach is tied for second worst in the league alongside 1. FSV Mainz 05. The only team with a worse record than the two? You guessed it, 1. FC Köln.

Not all is lost in the land of Kölsch and Karneval. Following a Hinrunde that saw FC take part in three competitions for the first time since 25 years, a coaching change, a change in General Manger, and countless injuries, Stefan Ruthenbeck was promoted from interim coach to head coach in the winter break. In addition, Simon Terodde was signed from VfB Stuttgart to bolster the FC attack. What else? Countless injured players, including German international Jonas Hector, are finally fit and available to play again FC. Survival in the Bundesliga may be slim, but hope is not lost.
