Matchday 24

The Number Crunch: At home against Bremen

1. FC Köln welcome Werder Bremen to the RheinEnergieSTADION on Sunday afternoon, with both teams aiming for important points in the bottom half of the table.

FC are unbeaten against Werder Bremen in their last nine home games, with four wins and five draws since FC last tasted defeat against Werder. That came back in 2005.

Milestone on the horizon

Werder Bremen could become the first side against which FC score 100 home goals against. At the moment, the tally lies at 99. FC have scored more goals in Müngersdorf against Bremen than against any other team.

Dieter Müller set the record for most goals in a Bundesliga game against Werder Bremen. The former FC forward managed to score six goals in a 7:2 win back in 1977.

FC have conceded just two goals from crosses this season. Only VfL Wolfsburg (1) have conceded fewer.

It is the 96th meeting between the two clubs in the top flight. It is also the duel between the first two teams to be crowned Bundesliga champions.

Two former FC players will return to Köln at the weekend. Leonardo Bittencourt and Yuya Osako played a combined 193 games for FC, scoring 31 goals and setting up a further 35.

Werder have been extremely clinical in front of goal this season. Florian Kohfeldt’s side have missed just four big chances this campaign – fewer than all other Bundesliga clubs.

Werder working well

Kohfeldt’s side have also improved markedly on last season’s issues from set-pieces. Bremen have conceded the third-fewest goals from set-pieces this term (6) – only Leipzig (5) and Leverkusen (3) have conceded fewer.

Joshua Sargent grabbed the winner against Eintracht Frankfurt, as the American’s hard work was rewarded. The striker has gone into more challenges than any other Bremen player (503) and has also completed the most sprints (544) of anyone in green and white.

Theodor Gebre Selassie has made 259 appearances in the Bundesliga for Werder Bremen, more than any other foreign player. The Czech international overtook former FC player, Claudio Pizarro (250) at the top of the list earlier this season.
