Matchday 4

The Number Crunch: Away in Freiburg

1. FC Köln take on SC Freiburg on Saturday afternoon, with both sides hoping to continue their good starts to the season. Here are 10 stats and facts to prepare you for the game.

FC have scored six of their seven goals this season from crosses, the most in the league. All of those crosses have come from different players. Jan Thielmann, Anthony Modeste, Jonas Hector, Kingsley Ehizibue, Florian Kainz and Tomas Ostrak have all picked up assists thus far.

Baumgart's good run to continue?

Steffen Baumgart is unbeaten in his last four Bundesliga games in Freiburg. His only game in Breisgau to date as a Bundesliga head coach ended in a 2:0 win for Paderborn. Baumgart drew his last three top tier matches with Hansa Rostock and VfL Wolfsburg.

FC have managed to pick up six points from the first three games of the season, their best start to a Bundesliga campaign since 2016-17. That year, Peter Stöger and the team went seven games unbeaten at the beginning of the season and secured a place in the Europa League for the first time in 25 years.

Anthony Modeste has scored in three of the four games against Freiburg for FC. The only match he failed to find the back of the net in was the defeat away from home last season. He scored the equaliser in FC’s away victory over Freiburg in 2019-20.

Then last eight matches between the two sides have produced a staggering 35 goals, with no less than three goals per game.

There are no former Freiburg players among the FC ranks, but it will be a chance for Dominique Heintz and Lukas Kübler to catch up with former colleagues.

Super start for Freiburg

Freiburg are enjoying their best ever start to a Bundesliga season in the club’s history. After a 0:0 draw with Arminia Bielefeld, back-to-back wins against Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart mean that they currently sit in fourth position.

Christian Streich was full of praise for Steffen Baumgart in the build-up as he takes on his favourite Bundesliga opponents. Streich’s men won 5:0 at home against FC last season, the highest win in his tenure with SCF in the top-flight. The 56-year-old has claimed victory in eight of 11 Bundesliga meetings between the sides.

Nils Petersen has scored six goals against FC in the Bundesliga. The experienced forward has only scored more often against Eintracht Frankfurt (7) in the top-flight.

Mark Flekken has proven his worth to Freiburg since returning from injury and the Dutch shotstopper has picked up where he left off last season. Flekken has managed to keep out 80% of the shots he has faced this season, the fifth-best in the Bundesliga.
