The Number Crunch: VSG Altglienicke

1. FC Köln take on VSG Altglienicke in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Saturday. Markus Gisdol’s team are facing a Pokal debutant at the weekend, with FC keen to continue the good first-round record of recent years against clubs from Berlin.

This is the third time in five seasons that FC have faced off against a Berlin-based club in the DFB-Pokal first round. After wins over both BFC Preussen (7:0) and BFC Dynamo (9:1), Markus Gisdol’s men will be hoping to make it three from three.

For the first time since 1998, 1. FC Köln will play a first round DFB-Pokal game at home.

Can Cordoba keep up his record?

Jhon Cordoba boasts five goals from his 384 minutes of Pokal action thus far. The Colombian averages a goal every 77 minutes in the cup. Cordoba has also scored in every Pokal season since he arrived in Germany.

FC’s leading appearance makers in the DFB-Pokal are Jonas Hector and Timo Horn. The pair have both featured 18 times in the cup.

It is the 62nd DFB-Pokal season in FC’s history. From 10 final appearances, there have been four triumphs. The last of which came back in 1982-83, when the city derby against Fortuna Köln saw Pierre Littbarski score the winner.

For the first time in 197 days, there will be fans in RheinEnergieSTADION again. The last time supporters were in the ground, FC secured a 3:0 win over FC Schalke 04 on 29th February.

Altglienicke enjoying strong rise

Altglienicke have enjoyed a hugely successful rise since 2003-04. The club have played their way up from Kreisliga B (Step 10), into the Regionalliga Nordost (fourth tier). VSG are a Regionalliga club since 2017-18, capping off a steady climb of six promotions in 13 years.

The Berlin outfit have a former FC player in their ranks. Paul Maurer spent one season with the under-21s back in 2018-19 after his arrival from Lokomotive Leipzig. He made 18 appearances for the under-21s, scoring twice.

VSG have added some family feeling to their squad this summer. Johannes Manske arrived from Viktoria Berlin this summer and promptly scored twice against his former employers in the Landespokal final. His younger brother Paul, who makes the move from Zehlendorf, joins him at the club.

Altglienicke’s 6:0 win over Viktoria Berlin secured the club’s first ever triumph in the Berliner Landespokal. As a result, it will be the first time that they take their place in the DFB-Pokal first round proper.
