Stadium Check

The Rajko Mitic Stadium

1. FC Köln will travel to Serbia for the last match of the UEFA Europa League group stage. The setting is none other than the Rajko Mitic Stadium of Red Star Belgrade.

The Rajko Mitic Stadium in the Serbian capital of Belgrade is known for its passion and intensity. It is the home fans of Red Star Belgrade that make sure of that atmosphere. Particularly in the Eternal Derby between Red Star and Partizan, the stadium has been known to be a sea of lights and pyrotechnics. The rivalry is heightened by the fact that the home stadium of Partizan is built not far away.

The stadium was opened back in 1963 and was named after club legend Rajko Mitic just years later. Due to its structure and size, it has been nicknamed as the "Marakana" for its close resemblance to the Maracana Stadium in Brazil. The Rajko Mitic Stadium once held a record 110,000 fans in attendance. Nowadays the stadium has been restructure to fit 60,000, with 53,000 for UEFA Europa League matches. However, the old charm still remains: the players tunnel has a distinct unique look with graffiti drawn inside the tunnel walls.
