This is how FC's first training session went

On Monday, the FC players attended their first training session in preparation for the new Bundesliga season. 250 FC fans were able to watch the first session of the new head coach, who made it clear what he expects from his players.

Head coach Steffen Baumgart welcomed the squad. On Monday morning, this consisted of 32 players. On Monday, for the first time since the beginning of the Corona pandemic, spectators were allowed to attend an FC training session. 250 FC members or season ticket holders, who have been tested, vaccinated or have recovered, had secured a free ticket and saw the FC players put through their paces ahead of hopefully a successful season.

Newcomers Dejan Ljubicic (Rapid Vienna), Mark Uth (Schalke 04), Timo Hübers (Hannover 96) and Marvin Schwäbe (Bröndby IF) were in attendance, as were U21 European champions Salih Özcan and Ismail Jakobs. International players Ondrej Duda, Louis Schaub and Ellyes Skhiri are still on leave and Jorge Mere did not travel to Cologne until Monday for private reasons. Sebastian Andersson trained individually.

Baumgart pushes the players

After a short speech by head coach Steffen Baumgart, training started. First there was a warm-up session and then the players did some ball work. Pinpoint passing, quick movement and transitions were on the agenda. The coaching team made it clear from the start what they expected from the players. In between, the large squad was split into smaller groups to train six against four, or playing with three goals. Baumgart intervened again and again, encouraging the players. “The guys did really well but that was to be expected with the first session. I hope that they will do the same after 20,” said Baumgart. “You could see that the boys wanted it. You have to torment yourself and sometimes go where it hurts - and we will gradually work our way through.”

Applause for the goals

Despite the large squad, the cohesion of the group was immediately visible. Before the final game, all the players got involved and carried the goals onto the pitch. The 250 FC fans applauded the players and the fire and enthusiasm could clearly be seen.
