2-0 victory in Hamburg

Three wins in a row

1. FC Köln won in Hamburg with a score of 2-0 (1-0) thanks to a brace from Simon Terodde. Goalkeeper Timo Horn saved brilliantly throughout the match to extend the FC win streak to three.

After winning the Rhine derby a week ago, FC head coach Stefan Ruthenbeck made two changes to his starting line-up. Christian Clemens started on the right wing and Yuya Osako teamed up with Simon Terodde in attack. As a result, Lukas Klünter and Simon Zoller joined captain Matthias Lehmann and new arrival Vincent Koziello on the bench.

Entertaining opening stages

The match was exciting right from the start with two attacking sides battling over every inch of the pitch. Timo Horn had to show his top class early to deny a dangerous Hahn finish (1’). FC came close to scoring as well with Japanese striker Osako: First, he was brought down by Papadopoulos (5’), and then he could not get past keeper Pollersbeck (11’). Seconds later, Horn once again produced a fine save against Kostic (12’).

Terodde strikes

In minute 26, Ruthenbeck’s team won their first corner. Jojic swung it and Terodde netted with determination at the far post to make it 1-0 for Cologne (27’). Following this, Hamburg needed some time to respond, but the Serbian midfielder Filip Kostic was stopped by another outstanding Horn save (41’). Thus, 1. FC Köln had their noses in front at the break.

Terodde doubles his tally

Hamburg risked much more in the second 45 minutes and controlled the match with good passing in midfield. Still, neither side could create scoring chances for quite a while. When Ruthenbeck had just brought on the more defensive midfielder Lehmann for Osako, FC scored again. Özcan played with good vision into the path of Jojic and the Serb instantly delivered it to striker Terodde, who nutmegged Pollersbeck clinically (67’).

FC hold on

There was no doubt that this comfortable lead played into Cologne’s feet now, but Hamburg still tried everything they could against an organized FC defense. Özcan had a promising chance after turning several defenders, but was blocked by Diekmeier in the nick of time (83’). Finally, FC carried away 3 important points to raise hopes for survival in the Bundesliga.

Augsburg next opponents

Next week 1. FC Köln are determined to continue their strong run of 3 wins in a row in their home fixture against FC Augsburg on Saturday, 27 January 2018 (15:30).
