The FC players will play in a special kit against Hertha this weekend, which will be a sign for diversity. As in the previous season, the action will be supported by both REWE and REVK, who will turn their logos into rainbow-coloured versions for the match.
“1. FC Köln and the Kölner Haie are the two biggest sports teams in Köln. This is something we want to use, to stand up for diversity. 1. FC Köln stand for diversity on the pitch and in the stands. Diversity has lots of dimensions, be it where you’re from, your gender or sexual orientation. We want to send a powerful signal, in which we show the flag for acceptance and equality – over the borders of our sports and supporters,” said FC Managing Director, Alexander Wehrle.
Lionel Souque, head of the REWE Group, said: “Diversity Day 2021 is an important societal and social sign, outside more than just the city of Köln. I am particularly pleased that the Kölner Haie are part of the day once more. Diversity, differences and tolerance are part of Köln, just like the team, the members and fans of 1. FC Köln – which we are proud of. We at REWE are also a diverse group. Our employees comes from more than 140 nations. The REWE Group is a community from cultures and religions, different interests, opinions and needs. Therefore, “Live as you are! Together for Diversity” is more than just a motto. It is the secret to success.”
“Everyone is welcome at DEVK – as an employee, customer or partner – no matter where they come from, their religion or their sexual orientation, with or without disability,” said DEVK Chief, Gottfried Rüßmann. “This is why it is important for us to show our colours, together with FC, on Diversity Day for equality and diversity.”
One day after the FC game against Hertha BSC, the Kölner Haie will take on Pinguins Bremerhaven in special kits. The numbers on the back of the shirt will be in rainbow colours, and the Diversity Day campaign logo will be seen on the back of the neck.
“It is part of our responsibility to society to stand up for openness and to take a position towards this important topic. I am pleased and it is important that we, together with FC, position ourselves publicly and make that known. Whilst we remain in the times of a pandemic, both clubs and all parts of society face huge economics challenges, with this engagement taking on a higher importance than ever before,” said Philipp Walter, Kölner Haie Managing Director.
A diversity shirt will be available in the FC fan shops to mark Diversity Day. The proceeds from the sale of the special shirts will benefit the 1. FC Köln Foundation. A film produced by FC-TV, which will appear on FC's website and social media channels in the run-up to the game, will draw attention to the differences in society and at FC.
The Kölner Sportstätten GmbH, who have supported the initiative actively from the beginning, will continue to show their support and turn the RheinEnergieSTADION pylons into rainbow colours for the day. In the week before the game, flags of the campaign motive line the Oskar-Rehfeldt-Weg towards the stadium. Geißbockheim will also be lit up in support of Diversity Day.
The Haie and FC do not want to just turn attentions to an important topic in society but to engage themselves in diversity and equality for the long-term. Surrounding the Matchday, they will inform, explain and give platforms to LGBTIQ* initiatives. The aim is to generate income for the youth and meeting centre "anyway", one of the most important institutions of the gay and lesbian community in Köln.
The Haie and 1. FC Köln thank their partners, the Kölner Sportstätten, the Sportamt, RheinEnergie, both REWE and DEVK as well as the Lanxess-Arena for their support. The away teams, Hertha BSC and Pinguins Bremerhaven, are also part of the project and support the message.
