Training camp: Day 1 – arrival in Mallorca

In Mallorca, the 1. FC Köln players are currently in a training camp as preparation for the upcoming Rückrunde games. The training camp updates follow FC on the Balearic Island.

Day 1: Departure and arrival

+++ 7:48am: Katterbach travels to the clinic +++

The first suitcases begin to roll on the tarmac around Geißbockheim. From the dressing room, the 1. FC Köln players are making their way to the team bus. Salih Özcan and Noah Katterbach are heading to the carpark together, only to then go their separate ways. While Özcan was hopping on the team bus headed to the airport, Katterbach was headed for an MRI scan in the MediaPark-Klinik. The FC youngster had to be subbed off the day before, after he was injured in the friendly against FC Groningen.

+++ 7:55am: Departure from Geißbockheim +++

Jhon Cordoba was the last player to make his way onto the team bus, as the FC squad took off. Through the early morning traffic, the team were making their way to the Business Aviation Centre of Köln-Bonn Airport. It was pretty chilly in the morning, as the thermometer read 4°C. On the way to the airport, the team headed through Porz and it had snowed through the night. The light covering of snow slowly turned to slush. A quick look to the weather app showed that Mallorca was expecting sunshine and 16°C. Not bad.

+++ 9:55am: Applause before departure +++

The team went through security and boarding, before taking their places on the plane. Flight EW582 is ready for take off. Before taxi and take-off, the captain had a special message: “We heartily welcome 1. FC Köln on board our flight to Palma de Mallorca.” The guests responded with a round of applause.

+++ 10:08am: Over the clouds… +++

13 minutes later than planed, flight EW582 took off from Köln-Bonn airport. It was a small delay that was quickly made up thanks to a strong tailwind. The FC players on board passed the time with music, series and newspapers. Salih Özcan, Jonas Hector, Christian Clemens, Louis Schaub, Rafael Czichos and Dominick Drexler faced off against one another on the Nintendo Switch with Mario Kart.

+++ 11:56am: Arrival in Palma de Mallorca +++

Palm trees, blue skies and sunshine: FC landed comfortably in Mallorca. Jorge Meré was visibly happy as he and his team-mates left the airport terminal. “Mallorca is perfect,” is what the Spaniard had commented before the trip to the training camp. A bus was already there and waiting to bring the team to the hotel.

+++ 12:41pm: Arrival at the team hotel +++

The 13 kilometres between the airport and hotel were covered quickly. During the training camp, the team will be staying at the Castillo Hotel Son Vida. The hotel website describes what awaits the FC players: “an authentic castle from the 13th century, that offers breath-taking views of Mallorca and the bay in Palma.” There is no doubt that the setting is superb. However, Markus Anfang’s men didn’t head to Mallorca for a holiday. The first training session is already scheduled for the afternoon.

+++ 1:24pm: Time for buffet +++

Time for a late lunch. The FC players headed for the buffet and whether it be salad, grilled vegetables, pasta or fish, every taste was catered for. Afterwards, the players headed to their rooms. Up until the first session, they had a little time to unwind.

+++ 2:35pm: Bad news from Köln +++

During the short break in Mallorca, there was news from Köln. The result of Noah Katterbach’s MRI scan had come through. The 17-year-old had partially torn an ankle ligament after a tough challenge in the game against Groningen on Tuesday evening. He was, as a result, unable to make his way to the training camp and joined Marco Höger, Vincent Koziello, Matthias Lehmann and Brady Scott in completing individual programmes in Köln.

+++ 3:56pm: Anfang’s overview +++

Shortly before the first training session, FC head coach, Markus Anfang had a short chat with the journalists who had travelled to Mallorca: “We will, as we did in the summer training camp, work in groups of eight. Especially in the morning, one group will always be working on fitness. In the afternoon, we’ll train on the bigger pitch.”

+++ 4:18pm: Goalkeepers head out +++

While the team are warming up on the adjacent pitch, the goalkeepers have already started their work with goalkeeper coach, Andreas Menger. Along with Timo Horn, Jan-Christoph Bartels and under-17 goalkeeper, Daniel Adamczyk are training hard. Thomas Kessler (cold) has sat the session out. Benno Schmitz, who is currently recovering from a knock in training, completed an individual session with Dennis Morschel and will continue to work on his own.

+++ 4:33pm: Mendel meets fans +++

Rainer Mendel and his team meet the FC fans who made the trip to Mallorca. They will be the point of contact for any queries they may have.

+++ 4:58pm: First training match is over +++

The first training session is over, and so is the first training match. The game finished 1:1 between the two teams. The team are heading back to the team hotel and will then make their way to dinner at 7pm.
