Training camp: Day 3 – Good and bad news

In Mallorca, the 1. FC Köln players are currently in a training camp as preparation for the upcoming Rückrunde games. The training camp updates follow FC on the Balearic Island.

Day 3: Birthday, scans and refreshment

+++ 8:12am: Happy Birthday +++

After the daily activation session, it's time for congratulations. Salih Özcan's birthday is today and the young midfielder turns 21. His team-mates share an embrace and wish him well.

+++ 8:43am: Sobiech goes for a scan +++

At breakfast, Dr. Peter Schäferhoff decides that he will head with Lasse Sobiech to the clinic in Palma, in order to have an MRI scan. Schäferhoff wants to be sure that Sobiech isn't seriously injured. The day before, the defender broke off from training early due to muscular problems.

+++ 9:45am: Tea and hankies for Kessler +++

Of we go! The FC team is headed for the training ground. Between the streams of cloud, the sun tries to break through. However, Thomas Kessler is not with the team. Instead, he showed the FC fans how his day was going on Instagram. Unfortunately for Kess, it was a case of spending a third day in the hotel with tee, hankies and medicine to try and clear up the troublesome cold.

+++ 10:18am: A returnee to training +++

There is good news regarding Matze Bader. The defender is fit again after beating his cold and is back training with the team once again. The training is, once again, taking place in groups as they rotate between working with the ball and working on their fitness. During the weight training, things were cranked up a notch from the day before. Today, it's more work with the kettle bells. However, it's also a case of throwing medicine balls and one arm press-ups.

+++ 11:29am: Press questions for Özcan +++

Birthday boy, Salih Özcan answered questions from the gathered journalists after training. As is normally the case with Salih, he answered questions with a smile. That included whether or not he'd got a birthday cake from his team-mates: "Not yet. It's all come a bit quickly. Until yesterday, I didn't realise it was my birthday. I think there will definitely be cake later."

+++ 11:58am Time to cool off +++

Tomas Ostrak, Darko Churlinov, Daniel Adamczyk, Jan-Christoph Bartels and Jorge Meré head to the hotel mood to cool down after a hard morning of training with fitness coaches, Max Weuthen and Dennis Morschel.

+++ 1:24pm: Media meetings and questions for Frank Aehlig +++

Today also brought about another round of questions for the players after they had lunch. This time, it was the turn of Jhon Cordoba, Jorge Meré, Nikolas Nartey, Rafael Czichos, Simon Terodde and Marcel Risse. Frank Aehlig also had a meeting. The head of the footballing department was in discussions for six hours. They study business management and study in Palma de Mallorca for two years, specialising in football and sport management. The third year of study is in Mittweida.

Aehlig spoke of his journey to where he is take with 1. FC Köln, on the differences in clubs, moving from the academy to the pros and the business of agents. The meeting has come to a close, but one student has a final question for Aehlig. Who's going to get promoted? "I'd like it if we got promoted along with HSV. I don't mean that in a disrespectful manner to the other clubs in 2. Bundesliga, but with HSV and FC there are two absolutely huge clubs going back to Bundesliga. I've never been in a town, where they live football as much as Köln."

+++ 3:29pm: Fans greet the team +++

Three flights headed to Palma de Mallorca from Köln on Thursday, and that much was noticeable at RCD Mallorca's training ground. With every training session, the number of FC fans around the pitch has grown. As the players took to training on Friday, they were greeted with a round of applause. During the session, there were some kölsche songs being sung. Jorge Meré, Marcel Risse, Louis Schaub, Simon Terodde, Jhon Cordoba and Dominick Drexler were away from that action, as they spent the afternoon in the gym.

+++ 3:51pm: News on Sobiech +++

The MRI scan confirmed the problems in the adductor area. Sobiech will fly back home to Köln on Saturday morning. Markus Anfang said: "It makes sense, when we have better conditions and treatment in Köln."

+++ 4:42pm: Day 3 is done and dusted +++

Markus Anfang brings the day to a close. The FC fans in the stands sing happy birthday to Salih Özcan, and the FC birthday boy heads over to thank them for their wishes. After that, it's time for Salih and the guys to head back to the hotel. After dinner, the FC players have time to relax before heading to bed at 10:30pm.
