U17: FC into final after beating Bayern

1. FC Köln’s under-17s are into the German Championship final after a 4:0 (5:0) win over FC Bayern Munich. Marvin Obuz, Joshua Schwirten, Jan Thielmann and Florian Wirtz all got on the scoresheet on Saturday to set-up a showdown with Borussia Dortmund next Sunday.

Even opening half

Bayern picked up from where they left off in the second-half against FC in the first-leg, and were exerting early pressure on Martin Heck’s men. However, much like in Munich, they were struggling to create any real effort of note. FC began to come forward more, and one counter caused the visitors real issues. Jan Thielmann’s run to goal was halted by Roman Reinelt, who was subsequently sent-off.

Bayern remained in the game and had the chance to catch FC on the counter, but the back-line remained solid as both Yusuf Örnek and Dennis Dahmen began to control the game from the back. That said, it was an impressive Finn Lanser tackle that meant Bayern had to settle for just a corner from Lasse Günther’s daring run.

FC then began to put the pressure on towards the end of the half. Marvin Obuz curled an effort just wide of the far corner as Manuel Kainz watched on. Florian Wirtz and Obuz continued to look dangerous, as did Thielmann running the flanks, but a midfield battle was the ultimate story of a very even and tense first period.

Goals galore

Any doubts over where the game was headed were settled shortly after the break. Florian Wirtz played a superb through ball to Marvin Obuz, and he broke clear on goal before calmly slotting past Kainz and into the back of the net. Cue wild celebrations on the touchline and from the near 4,000 fans packed into Franz-Kremer-Stadion.

Jacob Jansen, who had come off the bench for Batuhan Özden at the break, then slid the ball just wide of the far post in the search for a second. However, Martin Heck’s men didn’t have to wait long before they made things more comfortable. Obuz drove into the box before laying the ball back to Joshua Schwirten, who powered home into the box corner from 16 yards.

Sebastian Papalia and Jan Thielmann almost added to the scoreline, but Thielmann didn’t waste a second chance. It was a superb pass from Wirtz that split the defence once more and Thielmann rounded Kainz to finish into an empty net to grab a well-deserved goal.

Things got even better late on as Wirtz, much like Thielmann, managed to reward his performance by getting on the scoresheet. Jens Castrop’s clever through ball saw the attacking midfielder produce a finish similar to that of Obuz and send FC into the final in style. Heck’s side will now face Borussia Dortmund in the final next Saturday after they overcame VfL Wolfsburg in the other semi-final.
