Seasons ended for youth teams

U19 and U17s are West German champions

The 1. FC Köln under-19s and under-17s have been crowned West German champions. The seasons in both leagues will not be played to an end due to the Corona pandemic, and there will therefore be no German champion this year.

The 1. FC Köln under-19s and under-17s have been been named champions of their respective divisions. The leagues could not be continued due to the current Corona crisis, which was finally decided on by the DFB and the clubs on Monday. The tables will be taken as they are, up to the current matchday – meaning that FC, as the teams top of the league in both divisions, have been crowned West German champions.

Matthias Heidrich and Carsten Schiel are Heads of the FC Youth Academy. Heidrich said: “We are proud that our boys had such a great season. To be West German champions in both age grups in the same season is special. The boys have developed brilliantly and we're very satisfied with what they've done. But we’re can't properly celebrate. Our talented players fought for a year to make their dream of getting into the Championship round a reality. This is now gone and some of the players won’t have that chance again. This is, however, not a critic on the decision to stop the leagues. For us it was always clear that the season could only be continued when it was possible to do so from a health perspective.”

Schiel said: “A huge compliment to our coaches and players. We would have very much liked to have been German champions once again after last season, but that is no longer possible. We will help our players to understand the decision, which feels like a defeat to many. We have proven that FC is a great place for young players to develop.”

UEFA Youth League

The German champions would have taken part in the UEFA Youth League next season. In Germany, there are three different league for youth football at under-19 level: West, North/North East and South/South-West. Bayern Munich have/will already qualify for next year’s competition through the first-team, leaving FC (West) and Werder Bremen (North/North-East) remaining.

The DFB and clubs voted yesterday that FC and Werder Bremen would battle it out for what would then be the champions’ spot in the Youth League. There been no confirmation as to how, when and where this would take place.
