FC’s academy will play continental football this coming season. The under-19s have qualified for the UEFA Youth League. Due to the fact that the German championship was unable to be played due to the Corona pandemic, the DFB made the decisive draw on Monday as to who would play in the Youth League. This time, it was FC who had luck on their side as the Champions from the West were drawn out ahead of the Northern champions, Werder Bremen.
The Youth League is UEFA’s premier youth competition, with a nation’s respective national champions taking their place in the tournament with the teams who have qualified through their first-team. In FC’s half of the draw are sides like Rangers, Celta Vigo, Genk and Galatasaray. The draw for FC’s side – the Domestic Champions Path – takes place on 6th October 2020.
Matthias Heidrich, head of the FC youth academy, said: “We are really pleased for our boys and the entire coaching staff, that they will be playing continental football next season. But we are sorry for our colleagues from Bremen. We wanted to play for the qualification spot in a sporting sense.”
