Andreas Menger joins Hertha

Uwe Gospodarek is new goalkeeper coach

Uwe Gospodarek will be the new goalkeeper coach at 1. FC Köln. The 47-year-old joins from VfB Stuttgart and takes over from Andreas Menger, who has signed for Hertha BSC.

Uwe Gospodarek’s career spanned from 1991 to 2010. Alongside a long playing career, he went through the Germany youth teams from the under-15s to the under-21s. After his retirement, he began work as a goalkeeping coach at association and club level. Gospodarek was at Stuttgart since 2019.

Uwe Gospodarek said: “Since I can remember, 1. FC Köln has been known for their excellent goalkeeping development. In Köln, the level was set early on when it came to developing goalkeepers – Toni Schumacher and Bodo Illgner were dominant over years. For nine years, Timo Horn has been the number one and he is out of the academy. I am very pleased to be part of this tradition and will do everything to ensure that the FC goalkeepers will also be developed long-term in the future and reach the highest possible level.”

Andreas Menger said: “I am very proud that I was able to spend another three-and-a-half years at Geißbockheim as part of the coaching staff at this special club after my time playing at FC. A special thanks goes to alexander Wehrle, all of my colleagues, goalkeepers, players, the talents at Geißbockheim and all of the employees here for a wonderful time together. My last note of thanks goes to the management, who made it uncomplicated for me to take on a new challenge at Hertha BSC. I wish FC all the best and will remain connected to the club.”

Thomas Kessler, Head of Football, said: “Andreas Menger was goalkeeper coach here for three-and-a-half years, did some very good work and leaves professional structures behind him. We thank him for his efforts and wish him the best for his new job. In Uwe Gospodarek, we have the ideal solution with the perfect profile in order to continue our successful goalkeeping work here.”

Uwe Gospodarek is a former footballer and has been working as a goalkeeper coach since retirement. He made his debut with FC Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. Later, he helped VfL Bochum to their first ever UEFA Cup appearance. After that, he featured for 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hannover 96. Across his career, Gospodarek made 71 Bundesliga and 156 2. Bundesliga appearances.

As a goalkeeper coach, he worked with Wacker Burghausen before coaching the Germany under-21s from 2010 to 2012. He spent the following seven years working with the goalkeeping talents at Bayern Munich before then joining VfB Stuttgart’s first-team.
