Peter Stöger on Schalke

“We want to sprout hope”

1. FC Köln travel to Gelsenkirchen on Saturday to face FC Schalke 04. FC head coach Peter Stöger spoke on Thursday about surprising the opponent.

Peter Stöger spoke on Thursday’s press conference about…

  • …the omens ahead of Saturday: “We always played well in Schalke, but we also know that we do not find ourselves in a great situation. The injury situation does not make things better. On the other side, maybe that is exactly what we need to play with more freedom. We want to use the match on Saturday to sprout hope. That is all the incentive we need. We want to win.”
  • …the opponent: “Schalke is currently doing a great job. They are impressive. They managed the extraordinary against Dortmund. It will be a very difficult match against an opponent in fine form.”
  • …his own fate: “The sporting performance is obviously not there and it is a fact that I belong to the cause as to why we only have two points. However, my role is clear as the head coach of this team that I continue to prepare and lead this team. It is my job to go into this as positively as possible as long as I am here. Anybody that knows me also knows that 1. FC Köln is something special for me.”
  • …media reports that he has become more strict: “There have been many reports in recent days, but you will not find me in my car at night driving to each player’s home and checking to see if their lights are off. People are trying to read into things that are not there at the moment. I do not think I need to make sure whether players are going out on a Friday night if we have an important match coming up.”
  • …the injury situation: “Our situation is not easy. Sehrou Guirassy, who picked up a knock to the knee during the week, should be available on Saturday. By the looks of it, however, Leonardo Bittencourt will not be available. We do not have much depth at the moment, but we still intend on fielding a competitive Bundesliga team. Our job is to put in a performance on the pitch that nobody expects of us at the moment. Everybody at our club has the interest of winning this match on Saturday.”
