3:1 victory

Win against Bielefeld

1. FC Köln secured a 3:1 win against Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday afternoon at the RheinEnergieSTADION. Mark Uth opened the scoring before Timo Hübers unfortunately put through his own net. Anthony Modeste gave FC the lead just before the break and then teed up Jan Thielmann to put the game to bed.

Team news

Steffen Baumgart made just one change to the team that started the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Benno Schmitz replaced Kingsley Ehizibue at right-back.

Marco Kostmann opted for three changes as he replaced Frank Kramer as head coach. Jacob Laursen and Fabian Kunze dropped out for George Bello and Sebastian Vasiliadis.

Ahead at the break

FC got off to the perfect start after just three minutes. After a free-kick was cleared to Florian Kainz, he managed to pick out Jonas Hector and he fed Mark Uth to fire a spinning finish into the bottom corner. Hector and Alessandro Schöpf clashed heads not long after and the FC captain came off the worse of the two, having treatment for 10 minutes before being replaced by Jannes Horn just before the half-hour mark.

Moments later, the dangerous Uth clipped the crossbar with a curling free-kick on the angle. It looked like it was a matter of time before FC double their advantage. However, a mistake from Luca Kilian allowed Patrick Wimmer to race through and his attempted cut-back for Janni Serra was put into his own goal by the unfortunate Timo Hübers.

The equaliser seemed to give FC a new lease of life. Dejan Ljubicic robbed Schöpf of the ball and with Stefan Ortega out of goal, his curler edged inches past the far post. Baumgart’s charges were not to be denied, though. A fine pass from Uth picked out Anthony Modeste in the area, and the Frenchman’s deflected effort managed to find the back of the net for his 17th goal of the season.

Thielmann makes sure of the three points

The opening stages of the second-half saw both sides struggle. Neither were able to find any rhythm, and it was set-pieces that were proving the most dangerous to both goals. Joakim Nilsson headed a corner just wide of the mark whilst Mark Uth’s curling free-kick was tipped over and around the post by the scurrying Ortega.

It was Marvin Schwäbe’s turn to shine not long after. The FC ‘keeper did brilliantly to tip over Guillerme Ramos’ flicked header and stayed tall to block Burak Ince when one-on-one. Bielefeld were pushed up and as Kingsley Ehizibue slipped Anthony Modeste in behind the back-line, he was able to tee up Jan Thielmann to thunder home and start the party in front of the Südkurve.

The win maintained FC’s position in seventh place, one point behind Union Berlin. FC are next in action on Saturday afternoon against FC Augsburg. Kick-off is at 15:30 CEST at the WWK arena.
