For the first time in club history, 1. FC Köln and the under-19s will take part in the UEFA Youth League. FC were crowned West German champions in the 2019-20 season and, as a result, earned their right to play in Europe’s premiere youth competition. Last term, FC were due to face Rangers in the first round but the competition was cancelled due to the pandemic. This year, it is a short trip across the border to Belgium and KRC Genk. The home game and first leg will take place on 29th September before the return leg and trip to Genk on 19th October.
U19 head coach, Stefan Ruthenbeck: “In Genk, we have managed to get one of the most difficult opponents in the draw. Genk’s academy is superb. But I am convinced that the Belgians will say that about us. For our boys, this is a special experience. They have the chance to prove themselves on the international stage and obviously we want to win the tie and progress to the next round. They will be great games and we’re really excited.”
The winner of the tie between 1. FC Köln and KRC Genk will take on the side that progresses from the MTK Budapest and AC Sparta Praha tussle.
