The laying of the foundation stone for Cologne Cathedral on August 15, 1248, marked a decisive moment in the history of the city and church architecture.
Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden laid the foundation stone for the cathedral building project to house the relics of the Three Magi there. However, construction dragged on for centuries. After 1520, construction came to a halt. It was not until the 19th century, when Gothic art was rediscovered and the industrial revolution brought new technological possibilities and financial resources, that construction resumed with full force. The Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, who declared the completion of the cathedral a national task, laid the foundation stone for the completion of the cathedral in 1842. In 1880, 632 years after the laying of the foundation stone, Cologne Cathedral was finally completed in its present form.
