Kevin McKenna has returned to 1. FC Köln for a second time. He will join as Assistant Coach and bolster René Wagner's coaching staff.
"Kevin brings a lot of experience as Assistant Coach from many different traditional clubs from the Bundesliga. At the same time, he knows 1. FC Köln very well from his past. His experience, his expertise and his character will be a good addition to our coaching staff. We're really looking forward to welcoming him back into the FC family," said FC Managing Director, Thomas Kessler.
Kevin McKenna was born on 21st January 1980. During his playing career, he made the majority of his appearances for 1. FC Köln. He also played for Energie Cottbus as well as spending time in Scotland with Hearts. His career as Assistant Coach began in 2014 in the FC Academy. After a year at 1. FC Kaiserslautern, he returned in summer 2021 to join Steffen Baumgart's coaching team alongside René Wagner. The trio also coached at Hamburger SV and 1. FC Union Berlin.
"I'm really happy to be back at FC. I have said a lot that it's a huge honour for me to play for such a big club and now to coach here. I'm especially looking forward to working with the staff and players," said Kevin McKenna.
Between 2021 and 2023, Kevin McKenna and René Wagner spent 98 games together on the bench. In their first season, they helped guide FC to seventh place and secure a place in the UEFA Conference League.
"I'm really pleased that Macka is going to be a part of things here. We've known each other for a while now and were able to learn a lot where we've coached so far. He knows me and the club and can 100% identify with our path," said FC Head Coach, René Wagner.
