Defeat to Bayern

10/29/2025

1. FC Köln gave a good account of themselves against FC Bayern München in the DFB-Pokal second round but still lost 4:1. Ragnar Ache opened the scoring before Luis Diaz equalised from an offside position. Harry Kane scored a brace either side of half-time before Michael Olise killed the game off.

Team news

Lukas Kwasniok made four changes to the side that started against Borussia Dortmund. Marvin Schwäbe, Timo Hübers, Cenk and Denis Huseinbašić were replaced by Ron-Robert Zieler, Joël Schmied, Tom Krauß and Ragnar Ache.

Vincent Kompany also opted for four alterations from the team that beat Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday. Sascha Boey, Kim Minjae, Tom Bischof, Leon Goretzka, Nicolas Jackson dropped to the bench Josip Stanisic, Jonathan Tah, Konrad Laimer and Serge Gnabry.

Behind at the break

FC started the better of the two sides and almost went in front in the 11th minute as Ísak Jóhannesson’s powerful drive produced a strong save from Jonas Urbig. Kwasniok’s side continued to cause Bayern problems and deservedly went ahead on the half-hour mark. Jóhannesson’s corner was met by Ragnar Ache and he headed home from eight yards for his first FC goal.

However, four minutes later, Bayern levelled. Konrad Laimer found Aleksandar Pavlovic on the left. His shot was saved by Ron-Robert Zieler, only for Luis Diaz to turn in from close range. Despite the Colombian being well offside, the goal stood. In the 38th minute, the visitors had turned the game around entirely. Harry Kane produced an incredible turn and finish to leave Zieler helpless from 10 yards.

Kane and Olise kill the tie

Despite the one-two punch from Bayern, FC were far from knocked out. Ache had another headed chance whilst Eric Martel forced Jonas Urbig into a smart save at his near post. Just as FC were building up a head of steam, Harry Kane headed home from a Joshua Kimmich corner to give Bayern some breathing space.

Trying to find a way back into the game, Bayern found their fourth on the counter. Luis Diaz squared for Michael Olise to kill the game once and for all. Linton Maina almost managed a consolation goal late on, though his curling effort came back off the post and into the gleeful hands of Jonas Urbig.

FC are next in action on Sunday 2nd November against Hamburger SV. Kick-off at the RheinEnergieSTADION is at 15:30 CET.
