1. FC Köln continue to build on the squad for the upcoming Bundesliga season and have signed midfielder Ísak Jóhannesson from Fortuna Düsseldorf. The 22-year-old Icelandic international has signed a deal until 30th June 2030.
FC Sporting Director, Thomas Kessler said: “Ísak has developed very well in the last few years and is ready for the step up into the Bundesliga. He is a strong runner, good on the ball, can play across the positions in central midfield and has the footballing quality that we were looking to add to our squad. We are very happy that he has decided to join FC.”
Ísak Jóhannesson said: “I am very happy to have signed for a club like 1. FC Köln and be able to play in the Bundesliga next season. I am looking forward to the incredible home atmosphere at the RheinEnergieSTADION and to help the team with my qualities. I am very thankful for the trust the club has placed in me, and I can’t wait to get started.”
As his father, Joey Gudjonsson was playing for Aston Villa, Ísak Jóhannesson was born in Sutton Coldfield. At the age of 15, he made his debut for ÍA Akranes in the Icelandic second division. In 2019, he made the move to the Allsvenskan and IFK Norrköping, where he quickly impressed and registered five goals and 13 assists in 44 games. From Sweden, he headed to Denmark and FC København. He won the Superliga twice before joining Fortuna Düsseldorf on loan in 2023. Fortuna signed the Icelandic international on a permanent basis a year later. In 61 games in the 2. Bundesliga, he scored 15 times and set up a further 11 goals. He made his debut for the senior national team at the age of 17, making 33 appearances (four goals) thus far.
