In the 82nd minute against Borussia Dortmund, Timo Hübers fell to the ground clutching his knee. The FC defender had to be brought off on a stretcher, with the pictures on TV heightening the early fears.
After full-time, the 29-year-old was brought to the MediaPark Klinik in Köln via ambulance. On Sunday morning, he underwent an MRI scan which confirmed a severe knee injury. On Monday, the centre-half will be operated on by Team Doctor, Dr. Paul Schäferhoff.
Thomas Kessler, 1. FC Köln Sporting Director, said: "In the situation and as it happened, it was clear to see that it wouldn't be good news for Timo. The result of the scan is a blow for all of us, especially for him. At a young age, he fought back from two long-term injuries to be back on the pitch and we are certain that he will do that again this time. Timo has a huge amount of inner strength and a superb mentality that will help him through this phase. We, as the FC family, will be close by his side and support him through every step. We wish him the best and the quickest recovery possible."
