Olesen: “It’s all in the head”
It’s hard to find a better time for your first senior goal. With his goal against SV Sandhausen, Mathias Olesen secured 1. FC Köln’s place in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. Despite losing a 2:0 lead, Olesen was on hand to head home in the 116th minute to make it 3:2. “We are extremely happy that we made it through. I’m also really pleased to have scored my first goal,” said Olesen after the game.
But how could the game turn the way it did? “They scored a penalty and then the opposition gained momentum through that. Then it was difficult to get back to where we were,” said Olesen. In extra-time, the game was brought under control once more. What was decisive? “A lot of it is mental at the end. I didn’t have much energy left but we had the desire and kept going.”
Securing the first win was “very important. We played well in the first two games but didn’t win. For that reason, it’s good and important to have got the win today.”
