Thielmann: "Winning auf Schalke is fun"
For Jan Thielmann, a dream became reality on Sunday afternoon auf Schalke. With captain Timo Hübers out with illness, Thielmann led FC onto the pitch. He found out before the final training session leading up to the game and was thrilled. "It is part of being captain for the first time, that you have to pay into the team fund," explained Thielmann with a smile. "But the fact I was already captain in pre-season meant I've already paid my dues."
Head coach, Gerhard struber explained his choice in favour Thielmann: "Jan is a young lad that has grown up here. He always gives 100%, takes on responsibility and enjoys a good standing in the team."
With Thielmann as captain, FC won 3:1. "Playing away against Schalke is always difficult, they want to play for the top places just like us," said Thielmann. "Therefore, we're happy that we could win here today. We're satisfied overall. 3:1 auf Schalke is fun."
The win came courtesy of a very young team. After Elias Bakatukanda replaced Dominique Heintz, more than half the team was from the FC academy. "It was clear from the start that we wouldn't be able to sign anyone. We haven't complained but instead looked to go forward with this squad that we have - that's what we're doing," explained Thielmann, who was especially pleased for Bakatukanda: "He's a good guy and has been training with us for a while. I'm happy for him and there are certainly worse ways to make your debut than to win here."
FC have now won three games in a row. "The start wasn't what we had planned, now we're slowly moving into gear," said Thielmann. After the international break, FC Magdeburg are the visitors to the RheinEnergieSTADION. Thielmann: "We want to keep our run going."
